Personal Expertise

Describe something that you know how to do well. How do you know you do it well? How did you get interested in this topic? How did you develop your expertise? How do you hope to use this knowledge/skill in the future?

The first thing I think I’m very good at is I have an excellent comprehension and retention. I’m always eager to learn new skills that can be used to benefit my study, work and life. As a result, I’m very popular among my friends and my students. I have developed this skill because I’m always curious about something new, something I’ve never done before. I can understand new concepts and applying them correctly. Since my major was English and Marketing I applied for education master program successfully. Though I never learned how to teach Chinese, after a period time of training, I was among one of the most popular Chinese tutors in the college of international education. And luckily, teaching Chinese has become an essential part of my life, and I hope to make a career out of it.
I really like to communicate culture diversity with my students. For instance, one day in winter, I had lunch with one of my American students and ordered two cups of hot green tea because I know both of us like tea. However, he just refused and said:” a cup of ice green tea”. I felt so puzzled and asked why, and he told me, in fact most of American like ice drinks. So when I come to the U.S. and see all the people with ice drinks in their hand, I don’t feel confused any more. I asked my students to teach me how to use social network service like face book, and in exchange, I introduced Chinese software “QQ” to them. By doing this, they will think “oh, the teacher is not outdated and she is even willing to learn our culture!”
I realize I can apply this ability to my future teaching which will help me to become a good and popular teacher as soon as possible. As a second language teacher, culture diversity and language barrier are two elements that can never be neglected. Being able to understand American culture and speak native English, I have more confidence in designing curriculum and arousing students’ interest in learning Chinese. And my students will rely on me and treat me as their friend. I believe teaching and learning can benefit each other, so that I can learn more from my students.
